The lads look so happy and so cute here. The reality is that they were smoking and drinking and carrying on with the birds. The record label was trying desperately to squeeze them into this super homoginized purebred thing – an anti-skanky Rolling Stones.
The Beatles, led by the dark lyrics and minor chords and asian influenced melodies – explored the darker more ominous side of their music after they bailed on touring – and starting full time inthe studio. "I Want You – She’s So Heavy" – "Come Together" fit this as well as "A Day In the Life" fit this dark side which they did like no one else. In 1967 they release BOTH Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band AND Magical Mystery Tour. Nobody – nobody releases two such monumental works today in a few months. The Beatles remain the top of the Alchemy to the fourth power groups – and shaped nearly every musical form for decades to come. Rick Butts
