Mexican Fisherman Story from 4 Hour Work Week

The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris had a profound impact on my life. For the first time I had found someone who understood that the way I wanted to live my life was not just pure laziness.

The other night my cable TV went out during a snowstorm here in Denver and so I flipped on Ustream.tv and started broadcasting. A handful of friends showed up to keep me company and we had a dandy chat.

Awe shucks, I didnt make the list. Waaaaaaa…. @Wendi.tv
    How soon you forget me.

    You read well :-)

Thanks for the laugh and for the lesson.

Okay Wendi – I added you to the post ex-post! Which proves again the squeaky wheel is a great networking tool!

I was sitting in a Chili’s watching football when I finished the video and made the post – and I saw your Tweet but failed to connect WendiTV to Wendy Freisen – the painful part of not being named Elvis Presley and just being done with it from a branding standpoint.

The “what’s my name – What’s my Twitter ID” thing is problematic – especially if your name is Bob Smith.

@MelissaTweets was asking her followers if she should change her username and I said YES! Which promptly got some losers to Tweet that “butts doesn’t like your username LOL” as if I should change mine away from butts.

When Twitter goes the way of so many social sites, she is gonna regret not creating a viable long term brand, if she is in any way interested in marketing beyond chatting on Twitter.

Thanks for the tweet and for the kind words! Keep up the good work :)

    All the best,

Great lesson. I think many of us spend most of our time working. Why not schedule less time for work and more time for fun and guitar lessons?

Great Video Rick – keep them coming!

    Wow -

I remember when I got Dr Denis Waitley, Brian Tracy, and Jim Rohn testimonial for my book The Safari Chronicles, but I think I was even more buzzed to see Tim Ferris, author of one of my favorite books of all time The Four Hour Work Week, come here and make a comment about my vid.

I saw him make a tweet so I assumed he was online and so I thought what the heck, I’m better looking and funnier than Gary Vaynerchuk, why not me? So I sent him an @tferris and lo and behold – he popped over and left the note above.

Thanks Tim, and thanks to all my friends who read my brain bursts here. I am very grateful to each of you.

    Rick

  • http://Wendi.com Wendi

    I hear ya Rick.
I tell people all the time to put their FULL NAME, no nicknames, and further their branding. When I came into your chat room I used my full name. People need to do that everywhere.
In my case, I am well branded by my first name, cuz of the Wendi.com, so people know me by Wendi. (except for you, who strangely enough has never heard of me. What rock, dear?) And they know me by WendiTV because I do my shows at Wendi.tv so I get a pass on the first and last name thing.
But everyone else… use your full name, or whatever you are branding.
    Tim Ferris- too cool!

    Wendi

    Well, heck, Rick!

I would like my Twitter handle to be my full name, but it is one character too long. I’ve considered changing my twitter handle to something short and sweet. I’m not especially fond of my Twitter name.

Finding my “brand” is a challenge. I’m kinda an online jack-of-all-trades. I podcast, videocast, radio host and guest, write, have a couple columns, and blog at my own place and elsewhere. Twitter is my love.

I didn’t like the suggestions you gave me via DM. The rationale for change didn’t outweigh the risk of losing the attention and rep built under the current name. I’m not opposed to changing my Twitter name. The question is: to what?

Well, being an egocentric narcissistic with a propensity to myopic tunnel vision is not easy. In my self-absorbed mirror gazing I had simply failed to connect the dots between Wendi.com WendiTV (twitter) and the topic we were discussing on Ustream the other nite.

But, I got you now! Locked into my sites.

Have you ever been tempted to use “Everyone Knows It’s Wendy” for a theme song or USP? Steal cups and bags from Wendys Hamburgers for branding ideas? Wonder how, if Chicago can be the Windy City – you could be……?

  • http://www.ApothecaryJeri.com Jeri ~aka~ “ApothecaryJeri”

OH! You added me …thank you my dear Mr. Butts!
I was so sorry to leave all the fun before the evening was over….especially in the middle of your “Blair Witch” segment.

Hmmmmmm, so now you got me thinking bout some things…..is it time to switch to my “name”?

Congrats on the Tim Ferris kudos….Exciting indeed!

    Jeri

  • http://RickButts.com Rick

I LOVE Apothecary Jeri! Unless it doesn’t describe you or what you do?

    Here’s why I like it:

    1. Apothecary is a way cool world that conjures up all sorts of net images

    2. Jeri adds a friendly and approachable modifier

    3. I freakin RHYMES for crying out loud!

If you are going in a new direction – or this is not you now – what ARE you?

Naming is what I do – complete names, usp, branding, the whole enchilada – and I do it all in 90 minutes for just $247.00

Just reading this I can’t help but think of how many people will still be struggling with the name thing come January 1, 2010.

Bueno, Manito, Mister Buttts….you hit it right on the nail. We get it, we really get it. Awesome piece of videography and content. Next I want to see choreaography out of you. What a combo!

  • http://www.maczter.com maczter

    I get it.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to put 4HWW back at the top of my stack and read it through again now that my own job has been outsourced and I’m trying to decide what to do for the next chapter.

  • http://RickButts.com Rick

    Choreography you say Ali?

I have been working up a video of me doing just that to “You Should Be Dancing” by the Bee Gees! But,. thanks for the kind words about the video. That book, particularly that story, really impacted me, and I hope it makes a difference in your life, too.

    Macztr -

If you are in between careers – I’d take a long look at the “muse” in the 4 Hour Work Week. This is a business that pays your bills and sets you free – an automated biz that doesn’t require you to clock in – or be chained to a retail store – (I’d kill myself now before going back into retail – what a death trap).

Ferriss gives a clear system for creating the muse – it’s doable – and doesn’t cost much to set it up. Barry Ochsner knows a TON about doing this, ask him.

  • http://locationindependentlivingnow.blogspot.com/ Gary Gray

    Hey thanks Rick

Loved your video and republished it on my “Location Independent Living Now” blog

Read your book. (once) I am making a commitment to reread it seven times or until I really start to “get it” lol

I love the focus of working with the idea people. I wrote four short stories that were published in May 2009 one of which has been accepted as one installment in a podcast series of readings. (coming soon)

Now I am working on four more short stories for inclusion in our second book in our Prince Edward Island Tales series of books.

We have a Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=98347554794

It is being sold on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Prince-Edward-Montague-Library-Writers/dp/0978399536/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256535258&sr=8-1

Rick. That is what I remember most from the book. What is funny, I was just with Tim at small pub in SF 2 weeks ago. He lives is life. He was having fun with the Mavericks acting like nuts in 1980′s gear and fake tattoos. If I seen him again, I’ll point him here. I am sure he will get a kick out of it.

I often tell that story (and man do I mess it up. But I get the message right I hope.) It is so true. We need to stop trying to keep up with the Jonses. We most likely have everything we want and need to make us happy.

Measure wisdom not by the answers we give but by the questions we ask. The right question is often the most simple but not always asked.

It is simple. – What makes me happy.

Ask the right questions. Now go work on getting to that answer. That too is easy.

Great video Rick. I know you always think like this.

    To your happiness.

    Hey Mike Filsaime!

Thanks for dropping by and sharing about hanging with Tim. If you scroll up in these comments you’ll see that on a fluke chance tonight – I saw he was on Twitter and @replied him and he came her and left a comment!

I’m resurfacing at last here on the web after more than a year of staring into my belly button and deciding what I wanted to do – and what was left undone inside me.

Never expected it would be NON automated, and working 1 on 1 – but I love working with these bright people – and not getting on airplanes.

    Hey Gary Gray!

You’ve been a good friend and a great supporter for a long time and I’m glad to finally give you something valuable. The best advice I’ve ever heard for writers is _ “Writers Write” – so keep at it and just keep getting better.

The web has given us such a great tool to deploy and monetize our ideas, this is truly the greatest time to be a writer, filmmaker, speaker, or idea person.

    Hey JT “Woody” Chandler,

If I were to respond to your comment with one word it would be – obviously.

Ideas without implementation are self defining.

On the upside, every fantastic invention, strategy, or improvement in the world began as only an idea.

In fact, even YOU began as your father’s idea. (Though it’s not likely he ever imagined you turning out as you have! 8-)
As I continue to attempt to clarify this new thing I do, comments like yours help me sharpen the message. I don’t want to be seen as a “brain fart” creator, even if I am very good at it!

Yes, I do create totally uinique and innovative ideas to help my clients solve the challenge of creating a life they love, doing work they love, and getting the word out to the right people, and some of my ideas are duds. Some are pretty amazing, too.

But, one of the most valuable services I provide is helping my “idea entrepreneurs” to sift through their concepts, titles, ideas, and strategies by applying my business experience to the likelihood they will accomplish what they really want (the lifestyle thing.)

In the end – I feel that having an experienced person partner with you on your business for a month or three and really pay attention and contribute as best they can – has a truly sharpening effect – and moves you a lot further down the road to your goals than you are gonna get going it alone.

  • JT Chandler

My father (rest his soul) had no plan except for a quickie in the bowling alley restroom. Oops! Sometimes wonderful things just happen.

    Woody rules :-)

  • http://RickButts.com Rick

    SEE JT?

A simple idea – with such far reaching consequences!

But, as you said, he had to implement!

    And so it goes…

  • http://LivingInAHumanSuit.com Scott Brandon Hoffman

Ha Ha, Dan Lopez and his low rider, love that guy!

Great message Rick, you’re a true creative entrepreneur (and entertaining…truly a guy after my own inner stand up comedian).

I’m with you, it’s all about the message, all about what you love, and all about having fun doing it without buying into that old message and way of doing things.

And by the way, Viva La Outtakes, that’s what I’m talking about.

    Peace my friend,
    Scott

I’m not griping and silently put myself on the twitter list as well.
    @johnfurst

Sorry I did not find the way hear earlier. Trying to make up my mind about various conspiracy theories, … but that does not belong here at all. In case anybody cares, Seth Godin left already more than one comments on my internet marketing blog, but that’s the guy for the corporate world, isn’t he. Great that Mike and Tim showed up here for a short talk.

    Before I go.
I don’t see many people changing their names on Twitter, but a lot are changing avatars like every other day on Twitter and Facebook. I think that’s foolish! If you wanna be more interesting throw up more, great, funny, … content (pics, videos, links, …), but allow your brand (name, avatar) to become a lasting impression. There is a good chance that someone with whom you had a single conversation a couple of month ago will remember you based on your avatar and name. So don’t fool around with that.

    Yours
    John
