Ed Dale Video on Product Lanches

What a world! Through the power of Twitter - and Skype - I found that Ed Dale aka: TubbyNerd.com had posted one of his absolutely one-of-a-kind videos about my now-infamous blog post about unsubscribing from email lists that don't send you useful content.

KNOW THIS: I think Ed Dale may have quite possibly hung the moon that hangs so brightly in my Denver Colorado sky. I bought the Underachiever Method package a few years back from Frank Kern and must have listened to Ed's audio CDs at least 10X each. To say that the UA Method changed my life would be an understatement.

In case you missed the point - I really like and respect Ed Dale.

In this video - which from the trademark grainy quality he gets from recording directly to YouTube - or has Vaseline petroleum jelly smeared on his $19 webcam lens - Ed makes some very good points with which I entirely agree.

Where we respectfully disagree - is in the comparison of Indiana Jones movie launches - where the goal is to get as many people as possible to plunk down $10 for a ticket to a 180 minute event before it leaves theaters - to 50% recurring-commission-driven all out massive assaults on the infinitely smaller Internet marketing niche.

While a motion picture debut will include product placements, paid tv commercials, and actors making the rounds of television morning shows, there is no phony "scarcity" play, the server doesn't "accidentally" crash - and they don't close the theater then magically re-open it on Tuesday for an hour.

And you don't have anyone who'd never seen the film cyber-screaming at you - or whoring out their last product (the one they "swore would never be made available again" - to sell as many as possible in their last launch!) for free as a bonus if you buy from them.

"The Product Launch Formula as it was used to sell both itself - and other Internet marketing products - is a phony, staged, and artificial manipulation of the very people with whom an authentic business should be trying to build long term relationships."

Thanks to Ed for speaking out on this, as well as Sherman Hu, Frank Kern, and Dan Theis, past and present Stompernet faculty. Your comments along with the other 80 so far - have allowed for a convesation which has been difficult at times, nonetheless conducted with respect.

Agree with Ed's point about the power and value of "Masterminding" a group together.

Also, presenting material step-by-step in a sequential format does deliver more value.

When you combine the Mastermind effect plus sequential delivery of information, the value rises.

Why?

The likelihood that the person actually does something with your information.

I do disagree with the Indiana Jones launch theory. In the end, after all the shouting and noise, let's see if the movie makes money. Seems to me, like Seth Godin (forget which book) has pointed out with the example of My Big, Fat Greek Wedding, even the movie makers get more bang for their buck on lower budget, viral marketing campaigns.

My guess is they've gone to the well once too often on Indiana Jones, but timing could work out. Let's count the votes… how many people buy tickets vs. the mega-bucks launch.

Ed, It's easy for you to say "unsub". But, it's not your list. And, I am sure that these marketers that just copy launch emails really do have something of quality to offer their subscribers. I unsubbed only because I couldn't stand to see that "name" in my inbox anymore.

Perhaps with your great knowledge, you could teach these people how to write a "good" email about these launches, and people can stay on their list. For instance, if I have 10 emails with stompernet as the subject line in my inbox day after day it makes me crazy. But, perhaps there are other ways to write the emaails about these launches that make them more palatable?

Anyways, good video from you as always, and also good point from Rick.

Mark @ 3:49 pm

It wouldn't be so bad if the emails contained something of use but most don't it's like being sold a second hand car mostly.

@ruth - Why couldn't you stand to see the email name anymore? I can only speak for myself - but I would never use the standard email provided for in a launch - I'd like to think that people on my list are there for a reason and want to here my view.

I TRY to be entertaining. Frank Kern - i think is the grand master of entertaining email. I think both he and I always try to do videos with our own perspective on a product if we decide to get behind it.

And I can assure you it's a decision - i have to KNOW that if I promote something it's going to be useful to my list

In fact - on this Stompernet promo - my first line was "if your a beginner - delete this now"

I should also be clear that the above breakout quote was not mine and I totally disagree with it.

Here is the other thing - as marketers - we need to learn from these launches - because launches work - plain and simple - and where i get really excited about them is when there conducted OUTSIDE of the cloistered world of IM.

Every major mail client (on the Mac it's super easy) has a rules feature - rather than miss out on a killer free course on how to run a launch. Create a rule that files any emails containing the word stompernet (or which ever launch is coming up…)

You archive the emails - they dont clutter your mailbox and everyone is happy.

But I worry when people learning Marketing - which is why Im here get offended by …Marketing… Im a bit extreme - but I even file spam…

Thanks Rick for allowing me to give my perspective on your blog - robust debate where you can respect the other side -while thinking that there argument is totally wrong (KIDDING)!! is rare and welcome

And you do wield that Strat with rare distinction!!

Hi Rick/Ed

Very nice video. The quality may not have been up to your usual standard but the content was well presented. Obliviously counted to ten and took the cool heads prevail approach. <clap clap clap

Ed believe it or not I really think that there are persons that get signed up because of a free whatever and then don't know how to unsubscribe from the list. Granted that they are most likely in the minority but they do exist and it can add to the frustration.

I still favor my idea of taking out the garbage once a week (more often if necessary) I have seen some email systems that look like New York City after a year long garbage strike. ( doesn't anyone know how to file or delete an email let alone unsubscribe from a list)

I am sorry but I do find even me getting more and more frustrated with giving an email address in order to take advantage of some benefit being offered on the net.

I have now set a goal to reduce, reuse and/or recycle every email that I receive. The goal that I have set is to eliminate email usage completely and move on to using real time voice communication like Skype, MSN, Yahoo etc. Blog posts and comments like Blogspot including the Twitter mini blog posts. Social sites like FaceBook and MySpace etc. Google tools like Alerts, Reader, apps and docs to collaborate with friends. (unrealistic?…well that's my goal and goals are set way out there)

I guess what I am saying is build a following rather than a list with the idea being that you look after your following and they will look after you.

So maybe I am all wet but I for one would like it if we didn't have to use emails ever again.

Is there a better way and if so a challenge: Lets find it, promote it and use.

Lets venture where no man has gone before, into the unexplored distant expanse of the internet galaxy.

BUT!… (no pun intended Rick) lol let's all adopt a regular routine of delete, unsubscribe and empty the trash of our email systems. If you don't need it…..delete it.

Smiles :o)

Gary

Stay positive, you just might get a charge out of it….

Rick @ 9:06 pm

Ed Dale rightly reminds us that he led off with a subject line designed to let his readers know for whom the email was intended.

For the umpteenth time, I will restate that I used an attention getting headline to leverage something that was going on that day - and asked the question "what if?"

No one, certainly not me, figured that anyone would just robotically follow the instructios in an email subject, from a marketer!

If you are on Ed's email list - you know how much he gives away for free - and how deadly good his teachings are.

If you haven't seen his Ustream.TV show - you are not living as full a life as you could be.

One reader mentioned on another post how he relies on all the free stuff that comes out - and I respect that.

Great discussion and kudos to Ed Dale for being a part of it.

Well darn it there's some time from my life that I won't EVER get back…. Finally I watched the Ed Dale video about comparing Internet Marketing training to University education..

Hmmmm…. I guess Ed doesn't realize that there is this new invention called SOFTWARE…. Yeah…. Software that can start folks off at the beginning by delivering them the first set of modules at the EXACT time they decide to join…

So what I hear is Ed Dale thinks that we are still living in an offline world where time matters….

Ed no disrespect man… I remember hearing that you did as all amazing Aussie's do and head to the Great White North to partake in all that Whistler has to offer….

Yeah… We are all shamelessly trying to promote ourselves….

For those reading….

Is Ed Dale Evil?

No…

Folks, Ed had it soooo bang on….

If you don't want to receive emails YOU have the power to unsubscribe….

Did I say something somewhat controversial regarding Ed's stance on doors slamming shut….

Not really…. Just some food for thought and in fact there are VERY legitimate reason just as Ed mentioned for SLAMMING THE DOORS SHUT….

In fact when I offer personalized workshops there is no way that I can open it to unlimited people because they are paying a premium to get my personal support and attention….

On the flip side of that if it's membership content being released in a generic fashion then why not have software in place to drip the content month by month….

Just invoking thought for readers….

Ed, do not take this as a personal attack…. It is not…. In fact I always enjoy watching your videos and hearing what you have to say…

Wishing all of you the best and look forward to the day when we are in the same room together having a laugh over this issue…

Best Regards
Colin "Google" McDougall
